Power Shift Canada is a youth event focused on climate, taking place in Ottawa from October 23-26. As a participant of Power Shift Canada, I will be attending various keynote addresses and workshops geared toward dismantling oppression, in preparation for the march on Parliament Hill (Monday, October 26) to meet face to face with our MP's aboutthe urgent need for action onclimate change. On Saturday, October 24, I will be joining thousands of others to “Fill the Hill,”aspart of the 350.org International Day forClimate Action. 350.org is a campaign dedicated to uniting the world on coming up with solutions to the climate crisis. The number 350 is significant because 350 PartsPer Million (PPM) is thesafe level of CO2 in the atmosphere scientists have determined weneed to reach. In 2008 we were at 387 PPM and rising.
I will also be attending training at the University of Ottawa on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Conference attendees will learn the best practices of climate organizing, including: campaign and event planning, recruitment, media, public speaking, lobbying, leadership development, coalition-building, campaign strategy, and community and campus organizing. After all the preparation, we will take our new skills to the Hill and meet with our MP's. If you are in Ottawa, come join us in taking action to bring attention to the climate crisis! For more information on Power Shift Canada, check out their website: www.powershiftcanada.org or, for informationon the International Dayfor Climate Action check out www.350.org. I'm hoping to meet lots of dedicated youth out there and getting them intersted in joining OOKPIK.org!
